"Life is messy," Dr. Hallowell says in this mini Distraction. "Let's not be phony or drive people into hiding with the terrible constrictions of shame," he goes on to say. Anthony Bourdain and Kate Spade have put suicide back into the national spotlight, but Dr. Hallowell has long been on a mission to end the stigma of mental illness. He shares his thoughts on celebrating human life in all its forms, the good and the bad, and getting people the help they desperately need.

If you are having suicidal thoughts, please call 1-800-273-TALK (8255) to speak with someone, or visit SuicidePreventionLifeline.org where online chats are available 24/7.

Dr. Hallowell is on a mission to remove the stigma of mental illness. One of the ways he's doing that is through his new memoir, just released today. Because I Come From A Crazy Family The Making Of A Psychiatrist is the true story of Ned's life and all of the people in it. Collision Media's own Barry Berman sits down with our favorite host for a conversation about Dr. Hallowell's unusual childhood, and how his early-life experiences shaped his entire future.

A portion of the book sales will be donated to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)

While some ordinary activities require people to engage in critical and creative thinking, advancements in technology have created a world in which many tasks no longer require this type of thinking. This absence is leaving many people ill-equipped to manage the critical and creative thinking challenges in both the workplace and life in general. Educators Louise Loomis and Tom Smith join Ned in-studio for a conversation about The Cognitive Six thinking skills and the essential role they play in meeting this challenge.

The Cognitive Six: A Guide To Teaching Thinking by Louise E. Loomis, Ed.D. and Thomas Smith, M.A.Ed.

A few recent conversations with friends has Dr. Hallowell thinking about how the world has changed in his lifetime, and whether or not it's for the better. He ponders questions like: Do we still have standards in society? Are millennials lazy? Is social media to blame for all of our problems? And, has the world gone to hell in a bucket?

As the Greek philosopher Heraclitus put it so many years ago, "the only thing that is constant is change."
